In recent years, the concept of “luxury” in the hospitality sector has undergone a profound transformation. Once considered a status symbol accessible to a select few, it has evolved into a universal language able to satisfy the expectations of an increasingly sophisticated, global, and experience-driven clientele. Luxury is no longer confined to comfort and aesthetics, but is now also defined in terms of time, personalization, and authenticity. Italy enjoys a unique competitive advantage, grounded in its cultural, culinary, and landscape heritage, which further strengthens its positioning as a destination of excellence. The Italian hospitality market is thus experiencing a new phase of dynamism: the entry of leading international luxury brands and the surge in post-Covid tourism flows have consolidated Italy among the most coveted destinations worldwide in the luxury hospitality segment, driven by a high-profile demand attentive to sustainability, wellness, and tailor-made experiences.
Over the past decade, luxury tourism in Italy has registered steady growth in demand, with an average annual increase of around 4% in terms of arrivals and overnight stays. In 2024 alone, Italy’s upscale hotels (five-star and five-star luxury) welcomed approximately 4.7 million arrivals and more than 14.1 million overnight stays, generating direct expenditure exceeding €9 billion (Source: Istat).
